Adverse Reactions

Hypersensitivity has been associated with the ethylenediamine content. The side-effects commonly encountered with theophylline and xanthine derivatives irrespective of the route of administration, are gastrointestinal irritation and stimulation of the CNS.
Aminophylline may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, gastri-oesophageal reflux, and other gastrointestinal disturbance, insomnia, headache, anxiety, restlessness, dizziness, tremor, and palpitations. Overdosage may also lead to agitation, diuresis and repeated vomiting (sometimes haematesis) and consequent dehydration, cardiac arrhythmias including tachycardia, hypotension, and electrolyte disturbances including profound hypokalemia, hyperglycemia, metabolic acidosis, convulsions and death.
